Building work handover and snagging checklist

Handover is the time to check the finished work, understand new fittings and collect the documents you will need. Agree how outstanding items will be recorded and dealt with, so nothing is left to an informal conversation on the last day.

Walk through the rooms with one clear list

Check the agreed work against the current drawings and approved changes. Record each outstanding item with its room, description and a photograph where useful. Keep defects or unfinished work separate from new things you would like to add.

Try the things you will use every day

Open doors, windows, cupboards and drawers. Ask for a demonstration of heating, ventilation and any new controls. Find out how to care for selected finishes and where maintenance access is needed. A demonstration can be more useful than an unexplained folder of manuals.

Collect documents and agree the next steps

Ask which certificates, completion documents, product instructions and guarantee terms apply to your project. Keep the latest snagging list, with an agreed next step for each item and a contact for questions after handover. Update the list as items are completed so there is one shared record.

Examples from our completed projects

The Tooting bedroom-and-shower-suite gallery shows bathroom finishes alongside furnished accommodation. The Acton roof-extension album includes fitted bedroom storage, a bathroom and the stair approach. Use those types of details to organise your handover walk-through: record joinery operation, fixtures, finishes and the route through the new rooms alongside the relevant project documents.
