Can you live at home during a renovation or loft conversion?

Can you live at home during a renovation or loft conversion?

Staying at home during building work may be possible, but it depends on more than keeping a bedroom free. You need safe access, usable facilities and separation from the work. Discuss the difficult stages before deciding to stay.

Ask which facilities will remain available

You need to know when the kitchen, bathroom, water, power or heating may be affected. A room can be untouched but still unusable if its only access runs through the building work. Discuss the difficult stages separately, rather than relying on a general promise that you can stay.

Plan separation from the work

Agree how people, deliveries and waste will move through the property. Children, pets and visitors need particular thought. Let the contractor assess the necessary separation and explain your part in keeping it effective.

Be realistic about daily life

Dust protection helps, but it does not remove noise or every interruption. Consider where you will work, cook and sleep during the most disruptive stages. Sometimes a temporary move is the more workable choice. Agree those arrangements before the start date so they are part of the plan.

Examples from our completed projects

The Ealing rear extension is photographed together with the original living room, while the Acton St Dunstans Avenue project combines a kitchen extension with loft and bathroom spaces. These whole-house views help you list the rooms and routes that a household needs to keep using during work. Agree access, facilities and protected areas for your own programme before deciding how you will stay in the property.
